Auto Level Price in Pakistan: Sokkia, Kolida and Budget Models

Auto level price in Pakistan in 2026 ranges from about PKR 25,000 for a budget 24x Chinese instrument to PKR 45,000 to 75,000 for a good 32x unit like the NA32 or Orion Plus, and PKR 90,000 to 120,000 for a Sokkia B40 or B20. Add PKR 15,000 to 25,000 for a tripod and staff. These are indicative market ranges; we quote by WhatsApp.

An auto level is the first instrument most contractors buy and the one that gets the hardest life, so it is worth spending ten minutes understanding what separates a PKR 28,000 unit from a PKR 110,000 one before you pick.

What is an auto level and what is it used for

An automatic level is a telescope mounted on a tripod that gives you a perfectly horizontal line of sight. You read a graduated staff held on a point, read it again on another point, and the difference between the two readings is the difference in height. That is the whole instrument. Everything built on top is about doing that faster, further and more consistently.

On a Pakistani site it is used for:

  • Transferring a benchmark level from the road into the plot
  • Setting foundation and plinth levels
  • Checking slab and floor levels before and after pour
  • Running a levelling line along a road or canal alignment for chainage profiles
  • Grading drains, sewers and car parks to fall
  • Checking the finished level of compaction layers

It does not measure angles or distances. For those you need a theodolite or a total station. We cover that choice in total station price in Pakistan.

The step from budget to mid-range is the one that matters. Below PKR 40,000 the compensator is the weak point: it sticks, it does not settle, and the instrument gives a different reading when you tap the tripod. Between PKR 45,000 and 75,000 you get a proper magnetically damped compensator and glass optics that read clearly in afternoon haze. Above that you are paying for Sokkia build quality and a compensator that will still be within specification in ten years.

Magnification: 24x vs 32x

Magnification determines how far you can read the staff with confidence. At 24x, a 5 metre staff is comfortably readable to the millimetre at about 50 to 60 metres. At 32x, that stretches to 90 to 100 metres.

Longer sights mean fewer instrument setups along a road or across a large plot, and each setup is a chance for error. For a building site where sights are under 50 metres, 24x is sufficient. For road, canal, drainage and housing society work, buy 32x. The difference is PKR 15,000 to 25,000 and it pays back in the first week.

Sokkia sells the B40 at 24x and the B20 at 32x. The B40 still outperforms most Chinese 32x instruments on optical clarity because of the glass, which is why consultancies buy it.

The compensator and why it matters

The compensator is a pendulum prism inside the telescope. You level the instrument roughly with the circular bubble, and the compensator swings to make the line of sight exactly horizontal. It is what puts the "automatic" in automatic level.

Three things separate a good compensator from a bad one:

  • Working range. Usually plus or minus 15 minutes of arc. Within this range the instrument corrects itself; outside it, it does not, and you get a wrong reading with no warning. Better instruments give a wider range.
  • Setting accuracy. Quoted as a standard deviation, typically 0.3 to 0.5 seconds. This is the real accuracy of the instrument.
  • Damping. Magnetic damping stops the pendulum within a second. Cheap air damping takes longer and lets wind and vibration shake the reading.

A compensator check button, which some instruments have, lets you tap the pendulum and watch the crosshair return. On a good instrument it returns to exactly the same place. On a worn one it does not. This is the single best five-second test of a used auto level.

Auto level vs dumpy level vs laser level

A dumpy level has no compensator. You level it precisely with three foot screws using a sensitive tube bubble before every reading. It is slower, the bubble drifts in heat, and it has no advantage over an auto level except that it is cheap on the used market. When a Pakistani buyer searches for a dumpy level price they almost always want an auto level and we tell them so.

An auto level is the standard instrument for height work and what this guide is about.

A laser level projects a visible or invisible plane. A rotary laser with a receiver on the staff lets one person level without a second man reading through a telescope, and is excellent for large flat areas like warehouse floors and compaction layers. It is less accurate than an auto level over long distances, more expensive for a comparable range, and useless in bright sun without the receiver. We compare them in detail in laser level price in Pakistan.

Most contractors end up owning an auto level and a line laser: the auto level for site levels, the laser for interior finishing.

What to buy with it

The instrument on its own is a paperweight. A complete working kit is:

  • An aluminium survey tripod with a flat head, 5/8 inch thread. PKR 8,000 to 15,000.
  • A 5 metre aluminium levelling staff, telescopic, E-pattern graduations. PKR 5,000 to 12,000. A 4 metre staff is lighter but will not reach from a deep foundation.
  • A staff bubble, so the staff is held plumb. PKR 800 to 1,500. Cheap and cuts the most common error on site.
  • A field book and a nail or paint for marking benchmarks.
  • Optionally, a change plate for soft ground and a sun shade.

If you are starting a crew from nothing, the whole kit with a good 32x instrument comes to roughly PKR 65,000 to 100,000 at market rates.

How to check an auto level in the field

Every instrument we dispatch has been through this on our bench, but a level gets knocked in a pickup and the operator should know how to check it. This is the two peg test, and it takes fifteen minutes.

  1. Drive two pegs, A and B, about 60 metres apart on fairly level ground.
  2. Set the instrument exactly midway between them. Read the staff on A and on B. The difference is the true height difference, because any error in the line of sight cancels out at equal distances.
  3. Move the instrument to within about 3 metres of peg A. Read the staff on A and on B again. Calculate the height difference.
  4. Compare the two differences. If they agree within 3 mm, the instrument is fine. If they do not, the line of sight is tilted and the instrument needs the crosshair adjusted.

The adjustment is a small screw behind the eyepiece cover and takes a few minutes if you know what you are doing. If you do not, send it to us. Collimation and compensator service on our bench is usually done within three working days, and we do it on Sokkia, Kolida, NA32 and most other brands.

What we supply

Our auto levels sit under auto levels, with tripods and staffs under tools and accessories.

Every instrument is collimated on our bench before dispatch, carries a two year warranty on new units, and ships across Pakistan in two to three days.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask us

What is the price of an auto level in Pakistan?

In 2026 an auto level costs PKR 25,000 to 45,000 for a budget 24x Chinese unit, PKR 45,000 to 75,000 for a good 32x instrument such as the NA32 or Orion Plus, and PKR 90,000 to 120,000 for a Sokkia B40 or B20. Staff and tripod are usually extra. These are market ranges; we quote by WhatsApp.

What is the difference between an auto level and a dumpy level?

A dumpy level has to be levelled precisely with foot screws for every reading. An auto level has a compensator that holds the line of sight horizontal once the circular bubble is roughly centred. Auto levels are faster, more consistent and are what every site now uses. Dumpy levels are effectively obsolete.

Is 24x or 32x magnification better?

32x lets you read the staff clearly to about 100 metres and estimate millimetres with confidence. 24x is fine to about 60 metres and costs less. For building and road work in Pakistan we recommend 32x; the extra PKR 15,000 to 25,000 pays back in fewer setups.

Which auto level brand is best in Pakistan?

Sokkia B40 and B20 are the most reliable and hold their compensator for years. For value, the NA32 class and the Orion Plus are solid 32x instruments at half the price. Avoid unbranded units under PKR 25,000; the compensator usually fails within a season.

What do I need to buy with an auto level?

An aluminium tripod and a 5 metre aluminium levelling staff are essential. Add a staff bubble so the staff is held plumb, and a field book. Budget PKR 8,000 to 15,000 for the tripod and PKR 5,000 to 12,000 for the staff.

How do I check if my auto level is accurate?

Do a two peg test. Set two pegs 60 metres apart, read both staffs from the midpoint, then from close to one peg. If the height difference from the two setups differs by more than 3 mm, the line of sight is off and the instrument needs adjustment. We do this on our bench before every dispatch.
